A hospital transformation in just 12 weeks...

The demand for quality health services in Canada and abroad has never been more prevalent, especially with year-over-year cost increases skyrocketing and the public perception of declining health outcomes. Hospitals across the western world face significant challenges in delivering consistent, quality-focused care in an environment of increasing cost pressures.

One such hospital is a medium-sized community health corporation with two hospital campuses, 500 beds, and 3,000 staff. After several years of fiscal difficulties and consecutive budget deficits, the hospital found itself in a precarious situation. Facing the risk of a full investigation by a government authority, the hospital's new leadership acted to take the necessary steps to correct their fiscal trajectory and save the corporation from financial ruin.

nD was asked to perform an enterprise-wide transformation initiative, removing approximately $25 million in costs from the organization. nD established a transformation office comprised of internal and external experts to analyze nearly two decades of financial and clinical data, to benchmark performance, and, to conduct an environmental scan to facilitate the development of implementation strategies. In just 12 weeks, nD successfully met the client's goals by identifying and triggering cost reductions, and by reaching the savings target set by the hospital leadership.

In Short: Through effective operations management and a robust financial strategy, hospitals can maintain volumes and quality and significantly bring down their cost base, without seeking to increase revenues/funding.
